Addition & subtraction

These four techniques alone will noticeably speed up your mental math. Work through them in order — each builds on the last.

School teaches addition right-to-left. This is terrible for mental math — you carry uncertain values into a result you haven't formed yet. Left-to-right means you build the answer progressively: at every step you hold a real number in your head, not a partial carry.

Example — 347 + 285
300 + 200 = 500
500 + 40 = 540 → 540 + 80 = 620
620 + 7 = 627 → 627 + 5 = 632 ✓

This single change will speed up your addition more than any other technique. It takes 1–2 weeks to feel natural; after that, right-to-left will feel wrong.

Instead of working with awkward numbers, round one number to the nearest 10 or 100, operate, then subtract the difference. Dramatically reduces cognitive load.

Addition — 68 + 47
Round 68 → 70 (+2)
70 + 47 = 117
117 − 2 = 115 ✓
Subtraction — 293 − 148
Round 293 → 300 (+7)
300 − 148 = 152
152 − 7 = 145 ✓

When adding a list of numbers, scan for pairs that sum to 10 or 100 first. Add those together, then handle the rest. Turns hard addition into easy addition.

Example — 37 + 53 + 24 + 16 + 45
Spot: 37 + 53 = 90 · 24 + 16 = 40
90 + 40 + 45 = 175 ✓

For subtraction, ask: "what do I add to reach the target?" Count up from the smaller number in convenient steps — eliminates borrowing entirely.

Example — 1000 − 437
437 → 440 (+3)
440 → 500 (+60)
500 → 1000 (+500)
3 + 60 + 500 = 563 ✓

This is how shopkeepers made change before electronic tills. For large gaps it's significantly faster than direct subtraction.

Multiplication

Four shortcuts that cover 80% of multiplication you'll encounter outside a textbook.

Split one number into easy parts, multiply each, then add the results. The most general multiplication technique — works for any number, any size.

Example — 47 × 8
40 × 8 = 320
7 × 8 = 56
320 + 56 = 376 ✓
Example — 23 × 14
23 × 10 = 230
23 × 4 = 92
230 + 92 = 322 ✓

5 = 10 ÷ 2. So any ×5 becomes: halve the number, then shift the decimal. Always faster than multiplying by 5 directly.

84 × 5 → 84 ÷ 2 = 42 → 42 × 10 = 420 ✓
124 × 5 → 124 ÷ 2 = 62 → 62 × 10 = 620 ✓

9 = 10 − 1, so n × 9 = (n × 10) − n. Same logic applies to ×11 (add n), ×19, ×99 — anything near a round number.

Example — 67 × 9
67 × 10 = 670
670 − 67 = 603 ✓

For any two-digit number × 11: write the first digit, add the two digits together for the middle, write the last digit. If the middle sum exceeds 9, carry 1 to the left.

Example — 43 × 11
4 _ 3 → middle: 4 + 3 = 7
4 7 3 = 473 ✓
Example — 78 × 11
7 _ 8 → middle: 7 + 8 = 15, carry 1
(7+1) 5 8 = 858 ✓

Percentages

The most practically useful mental math skill for everyday life: tips, discounts, tax, interest. All comes down to these four strategies.

1% of any number = move the decimal two places left. Once you have 1%, build any percentage by scaling.

Example — 13% of 400
1% = 4
10% = 40 · 3% = 12
10% + 3% = 40 + 12 = 52 ✓

Percentage is commutative. If one direction looks hard, flip it. 4% of 75 is identical to 75% of 4 — but one is trivial.

Example — 4% of 75
Flip: 75% of 4 = ¾ of 4
¾ × 4 = 3 ✓
// Far easier than 75 × 0.04

The fastest percentage work is fraction conversion. Memorise these and skip decimal multiplication entirely:

10% = ÷10 · 20% = ÷5 · 25% = ÷4
33⅓% = ÷3 · 50% = ÷2 · 75% = ×3÷4
// 75% of 48: ÷4 → 12, ×3 → 36 ✓

For any tip or service charge: find 10% first (shift the decimal), then scale up or adjust to your target.

Example — 15% of €80
10% = 8 · 5% = 4
10% + 5% = 8 + 4 = €12 ✓

In practice: round to the nearest 5% and move on. Speed matters more than precision here.

Beginner to advanced

One of the most common mistakes is practicing at the wrong level. Too easy and you're not building capacity; too hard and you're reinforcing errors.

Calibration

Time yourself on 10 mixed problems. More than 30 seconds per problem → start Easy. 10–20 seconds → Medium. Under 10 seconds → Hard. Pick the difficulty that challenges you without causing errors.

Beginner

Addition and subtraction only, left-to-right method and rounding. Don't move to multiplication until you answer two-digit addition in under 5 seconds without stress. Most adults underestimate how much their addition can improve — it's often the hidden bottleneck.

Intermediate

Drill multiplication automaticity and percentage fluency. Work through the 12–20× tables until they're instant. Practice percentages from real situations (bills, discounts, interest). Use the distributive property for anything above the times tables.

Common mistakes

Mistake 1

Only practicing when you feel like it. Sporadic sessions don't build automaticity. The brain needs consistent repetition — 10 minutes daily beats 60 minutes twice a week.
